Diversifying away from paddy helps save groundwater and can protect your income if you plan markets first. In Punjab common alternatives are maize, kharif moong, basmati instead of common paddy, cotton in suitable belts, and vegetables or fruit orchards near towns. Start by shifting only part of your land in the first year so you reduce risk while you learn the new crop and its buyers. Use your KVK and the state crop diversification programme for variety selection, agronomy and any incentive support. Direct seeded rice is another option that cuts water if you prefer to stay with rice. The key is a confirmed buyer or nearby mandi demand before you sow, because price, not just yield, decides profit. Check current incentives for maize or moong with your district agriculture office.

I moved about a third of my land from paddy to spring maize and kept the rest in basmati. Water and electricity stress came down. But arrange the sale beforehand, maize price can be weak if you sell at the wrong time. Going slowly was the right call for me.

Tried moong before paddy as a short crop, it adds nitrogen to the soil too. The trouble is labour and timely irrigation in the heat. Talk to farmers who already grow your chosen crop in your block, their practical tips saved me from mistakes in the first season.

I switched a couple of acres to direct seeded rice to save water without changing crop fully. It cut my pumping hours but weed control needs attention, plan your herbicide and timing well. For the rest I am slowly trying vegetables for the nearby town market.
