What is khasra and khatauni and how are they different?

In simple terms, the khasra is a plot-wise record and the khatauni is an owner-wise record. The khasra number is the unique number given to each individual plot or parcel of land in the village map, and the khasra register tells you about that plot: its area, soil type, current crop, irrigation source and so on. The khatauni is the account of a landholder, it lists all the khasra numbers held by a particular owner or co-owners in the village along with the total area and the share. So if you want details of one specific field, you look at its khasra. If you want to know everything one person owns in the village, you look at the khatauni. In Uttar Pradesh you can view both on the state Bhulekh land records portal by selecting district, tehsil and village and searching by khasra number or owner name.
