In the north Indian plains, the main potato crop is planted from mid October to November when temperatures cool, and harvested from late January to March depending on variety. Potato needs cool weather for tuber bulking, so planting too early in heat or too late risks heat at the end which cuts yield. Early varieties like Kufri Pukhraj or Kufri Lauvkar mature in about 70 to 90 days and let you catch early market prices, while medium and late varieties take 90 to 110 days or more and often store better. Prepare a fine, well drained seedbed, plant well sprouted certified seed at the right spacing and depth, and earth up at around 30 to 40 days to cover tubers and avoid greening.

Wait for the real cool spell before planting. I rushed one year in lingering October heat and the stand was poor and the crop suffered. A little patience for the temperature to drop gave a much better crop.
