Dashehari is the signature variety of the Malihabad belt near Lucknow and is the mainstay of growers there due to its sweet taste, fiberless pulp, and strong market demand. The Malihabad region has GI recognition for Dashehari mango. Many orchards also keep Chausa for a later-season harvest and Langra as an additional variety to spread the picking window and reduce alternate bearing risk. Plant grafted plants from a reliable nursery, manage mango malformation and hopper proactively, and follow recommended nutrition to reduce alternate bearing. For variety mix, spacing, and rejuvenation of old orchards, consult the Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow, and your district horticulture office.

In Malihabad most of us grow Dashehari as the main crop and keep some Chausa for the late season. Spreading the varieties helps because the rates and the picking time are different.

Malformation has hurt some of the old orchards around us. Cutting out and burning the affected malformed panicles and shoots, plus following the CISH advice on nutrition, kept my younger trees cleaner. It is a slow battle on old trees though.

If you have very old, tall Dashehari trees, ask CISH about staged rejuvenation pruning. We brought a couple of unproductive giants back into bearing over a few years by cutting them back in stages rather than all at once. Done in one heavy cut it can shock the tree.
