Is it worth hiring permanent farm labour on a monthly or yearly basis?

Instead of chasing daily labour every time, should I keep one or two workers on a fixed monthly or annual salary? Does that make sense?

Keeping a permanent worker (sala/monthly) makes sense when you have enough year round work to keep them usefully busy, typically on larger farms or mixed farm and dairy operations where there are daily tasks like animal care, irrigation and general work. The advantages are reliability, a trained person who knows your farm, and not scrambling for labour at peak. The trade off is you pay the salary whether or not there is work that day, plus often accommodation and food, so it only pays if utilisation is high. A common middle path on medium farms: keep one or two permanent hands for the steady daily work, and bring in daily wage or contract gangs for the peak operations like sowing and harvest. Work out your total annual labour need and how steady it is; if much of it is seasonal spikes, permanent labour alone is not the efficient answer.

I keep one permanent worker mainly for my buffaloes and daily field jobs, and hire gangs at harvest. The dairy work alone keeps him busy enough to justify the salary.
