Why Wind Speed Is Everything
A wind turbine's output rises with roughly the cube of wind speed, so a small increase in average wind makes a huge difference in energy - and a small shortfall can make a system pointless. That is why "it feels breezy here" is not enough: you need to know your numbers before spending on hardware.
The Numbers That Matter (Indicative)
As a rough guide, electric small wind turbines generally want an annual average wind speed of around 5 metres per second or more to be worthwhile, while a mechanical windmill pump can do useful work at lower speeds. These are indicative thresholds only - the honest answer comes from measuring your specific site, because terrain and tower height change everything.

Measure Your Own Site
For a real decision, mount an anemometer (wind meter) at or near the planned tower height and record for at least a few months, ideally across seasons. Tower height matters enormously - wind is faster and smoother higher up, away from trees and buildings.
Simple Signs Your Farm May Be Windy
- A consistent breeze you can feel most days, not just occasional gusts.
- Open, exposed terrain - coastal, plateau, ridge-top or open plains.
- Few tall obstructions (trees, buildings) immediately upwind.
- Trees permanently leaning or "flagged" in one direction.
