What Counts as a "Small" Wind Turbine?
For farms, "small wind" usually means anything from a micro turbine under 1 kilowatt up to a small unit of around 10 kilowatts. They come as horizontal-axis (the familiar three-blade type) or vertical-axis machines, mounted on a tower. The single biggest factor in how much power you get - after wind speed - is tower height: getting the rotor up above trees, buildings and turbulence can transform output.
Where a Small Turbine Works
You need open, exposed terrain with a steady wind and few nearby obstructions. Coastal, plateau and open-plain farms in India's wind belts are good candidates; sheltered valley plots usually are not. Because output rises steeply with wind speed, a site that feels "a bit breezy" is often not enough. Always verify with our wind check before buying.

Tower, Battery & Grid Connection
A taller tower captures faster, smoother wind, so it is one of the best returns on spend. For off-grid use you store energy in a battery bank; for grid-connected farms, a few states allow net metering so surplus feeds back to the grid. Decide tower height, battery sizing and grid-tie at the design stage with an installer.
Certification & Quality
Buy turbines tested under the NIWE (National Institute of Wind Energy) small-wind programme where possible, and avoid cheap uncertified imports that under-perform or fail. Ask for the power curve, the rated and cut-in wind speeds, and a real warranty.
Cost & Realistic Payback

Maintenance
Unlike solar, a turbine has moving parts, so plan for periodic inspection of blades, bearings and the tower, and occasional servicing. A good unit can last many years with upkeep.
