Overview

Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is the backbone of India's seafood export industry and the most farmed shrimp in the country. It is grown in coastal brackish water ponds, mainly in the deltas of Andhra Pradesh and other coastal states, and India is one of the world's largest exporters of frozen shrimp. Farming uses hatchery raised, specific pathogen free post larvae stocked at high density, with heavy aeration, formulated feed and careful water management over a crop of a few months. The rewards can be high, but so are the risks: disease outbreaks such as white spot and EHP, volatile export prices, and high input costs can wipe out profits in a single crop. It needs Coastal Aquaculture Authority registration, significant capital and good technical knowledge. Vannamei farming suits committed coastal entrepreneurs who can manage biosecurity, water quality and market swings, ideally starting after training and with expert guidance.

Climate

Vannamei is a coastal, brackish water crop and is realistically suited only to coastal regions with access to seawater or saline groundwater of the right salinity, and warm temperatures around 28 to 32 degrees Celsius. The main belts are the deltaic and coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and parts of other coastal states. It is not suited to inland freshwater areas except where approved low salinity culture is practised.

Soil

Ponds are built on coastal land with clayey or clay loam soil that holds water well, near a source of seawater or brackish water and good drainage. Ponds are typically shallow earthen ponds of about one to one and a half metres deep, fitted with paddle wheel aerators, sluice gates, inlet and outlet channels and pond liners where soil is porous. A reservoir or settling pond for water treatment and a biosecure layout are important parts of the design.

Planting & Spacing

Stock only specific pathogen free post larvae from a certified hatchery after preparing and disinfecting the pond and filling it with treated water of correct salinity. Stocking density depends on the level of intensity and aeration, ranging from moderate to high in intensive farms, but beginners should keep densities conservative. Acclimatise post larvae carefully to pond temperature and salinity, and stock in good weather early in the day to reduce stress and losses.

Varieties

The main farmed species is Litopenaeus vannamei (Pacific white shrimp), which dominates because of fast growth, tolerance of varied salinity and strong export demand. The older black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is still farmed in some areas but to a much smaller extent. Use only good quality, certified specific pathogen free seed of vannamei, since seed quality is one of the biggest factors in crop success.

Care & Management

Daily management is intensive: run aerators on schedule, monitor dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH, temperature, ammonia and alkalinity, and feed measured quality pellet using feed trays to avoid waste. Maintain pond water quality with probiotics, lime and partial water exchange as advised, and watch shrimp behaviour and gut fullness for early warning signs. Strict biosecurity, crab fencing, bird nets and disinfection of equipment are essential to keep disease out.

Pests & Diseases

Disease is the biggest threat. White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) and EHP (a microsporidian causing slow growth) are widespread and can cause heavy or total crop loss; surveys report a large share of ponds affected in some districts. Other issues include vibriosis, white faeces, predators and poor water quality. Prevention through certified seed, strict biosecurity, good water management and pond preparation is the only reliable defence, since there is no cure once a viral outbreak takes hold.

Yield & Harvest

Shrimp are usually harvested in around 90 to 120 days when they reach a marketable count, sold by pieces per kilogram (counts such as 30 to 60 per kg fetching different prices). Intensive farms in good belts report yields in a broad range of roughly several tonnes per hectare per crop, with high stocking systems achieving more, but results vary greatly with disease and management. Harvest is done by draining and netting, then quick chilling for the export chain. All figures are indicative.

Cost & Profit

Vannamei is capital intensive. Building and equipping ponds, plus running costs for seed, feed (the largest cost), aeration power, probiotics and labour, require significant investment per hectare. Cost of production is often around 200 rupees per kg, while farmgate prices vary by count and global demand and can swing sharply year to year. Profits can be strong in a good crop but a disease hit or price crash can cause heavy losses. Plan finances conservatively and treat all figures as rough, fast changing indications.

Most farmed vannamei goes to processing plants for export as frozen shrimp to the USA, China, Europe and other markets, with India among the top global suppliers. Farmers usually sell at the pond to processors, agents or through farmer groups, with price set by count size and current export demand. Because prices are tied to global markets and can fall, it helps to follow market trends, build reliable buyer links and, where possible, sell through producer organisations.

Subsidy & Support

Vannamei farming is supported under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for ponds, hatcheries and allied infrastructure through the NFDB and state fisheries departments, while farms must register with the Coastal Aquaculture Authority. Government assistance under PMMSY is generally up to 40 percent of unit cost for general category and up to 60 percent for SC, ST and women beneficiaries.
