Overview

Biofloc is a tank based system in which beneficial bacteria are grown in the water to convert fish waste and uneaten feed into a protein rich microbial mass that the fish can eat again. This recycling lets you stock fish at very high densities in a small space using little water and no flowing river. A typical backyard unit is a set of round tarpaulin tanks of about 10,000 to 18,000 litres with aeration running day and night. Species such as tilapia, pangasius, magur and koi carp are common because they tolerate crowded, low oxygen conditions. The attraction is high output from a tiny plot, but biofloc is technical and unforgiving. Water chemistry, carbon dosing and round the clock aeration must be managed precisely, and a single power cut or mistake can kill a whole tank. Anyone considering it should take hands on training and start with one or two tanks before scaling up.

Climate

Works in most of India because the water is in controlled tanks, but warm water species like tilapia need temperatures around 26 to 32 degrees Celsius for good growth. In cold northern winters growth slows and tanks may need shelter or heating. The bigger requirement is uninterrupted electricity for aeration; areas with frequent long power cuts need a backup generator or the system is unsafe.

Soil

Land quality does not matter as fish are kept in tanks, not soil ponds. You need a level, firm base to set up round tarpaulin or cement tanks, usually 4 metres across, under a low cost shed or open sky. Plan for a clean water source to fill tanks, drainage for sludge, and space for blowers, air pipes and a small lab kit to test water. A roof or net protects against rain dilution, birds and debris.

Planting & Spacing

Stock healthy fingerlings from a reliable hatchery only after the floc has been developed in the tank over two to three weeks by adding a carbon source like molasses or jaggery with a starter feed. Stocking density is high, commonly several hundred fingerlings per cubic metre depending on species and aeration capacity, but beginners should start lower. Acclimatise fingerlings slowly to tank water temperature and quality before release to avoid shock losses.

Varieties

Tilapia (GIFT and monosex strains) is the most popular for biofloc because of fast growth and tolerance. Pangasius, magur (Clarias), koi carp, common carp and singhi are also reared. Air breathing species like magur and singhi handle low oxygen best. Choose species permitted in your state, as some catfish are restricted, and match it to your local market demand.

Care & Management

Daily work centres on water management. Monitor dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrite and floc volume regularly, and dose a carbon source to keep the bacteria balanced. Aeration must run continuously; a backup power supply is essential. Feed a quality floating pellet several times a day, adjusting to fish appetite, and remove excess sludge so floc does not become too thick. Cleanliness and disciplined record keeping separate profitable units from failures.

Pests & Diseases

The main risks are not pests but system failures and disease. Sudden oxygen crash from power loss, ammonia or nitrite spikes from overfeeding, and a floc crash can wipe out a tank within hours. Bacterial and fungal infections spread fast at high density. Prevention means stable water chemistry, never overstocking, quarantining new fish, and reacting quickly to off feed behaviour. Avoid antibiotics; consult a fisheries officer at the first sign of disease.

Yield & Harvest

Most species reach a market size of around 250 to 500 grams in about 6 to 8 months. A well run 18,000 litre tank can yield roughly 500 to 700 kg of fish per cycle, though figures vary widely with species, density and skill. Harvest by netting or draining, and grade fish by size for sale. These are indicative ranges, not guarantees; first cycles usually produce less while you learn the system.

Cost & Profit

Setting up a single tarpaulin tank with aeration costs roughly 25,000 to 40,000 rupees, and a small multi tank backyard unit can run from a few lakh upwards including blowers and backup power. Running costs are dominated by feed, electricity and seed. Profit is possible but not assured, and biofloc has a high failure rate among untrained beginners. Treat early cycles as learning, keep careful accounts, and never invest borrowed money you cannot afford to lose. All figures are rough indications that change with location, scale and market.

Government assistance is generally up to 40 percent of unit cost for general category beneficiaries and up to 60 percent for SC, ST and women beneficiaries, subject to approved unit costs.
