Overview
Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) is an engineered indoor system in which water flows from fish tanks through mechanical and biological filters, gets oxygenated, and returns to the tanks in a continuous loop. Because the water is cleaned and reused, RAS uses very little fresh water and allows very high stocking densities in a small footprint, with full control over temperature and quality. It suits high value species and locations where land or water is scarce. RAS is the most capital intensive and technically demanding form of aquaculture in India. It needs reliable power, skilled operation, and constant monitoring of filters, oxygen and water chemistry. A failure in any component can be disastrous, so it is best suited to serious entrepreneurs who can invest in proper equipment, backup systems and trained staff, ideally after training at an institute like ICAR-CIFA or a state fisheries department.
Climate
Because RAS is indoor and temperature controlled, it can be set up almost anywhere in India, including hot, cold or water scarce regions. The system can heat or cool water to suit the chosen species, so external climate matters less than for ponds. The real constraints are reliable electricity and a clean source water supply, not the weather outside.
Soil
Soil is irrelevant since fish are kept in tanks inside a shed or building. You need a level concrete floor, a covered structure, a clean water source for top up, drainage, and three phase power. Plan space for circular tanks, a filter unit (drum filter and biofilter), oxygen or aeration equipment, a sump and a small water testing area. Good shed ventilation and a backup generator are part of the basic build.
Planting & Spacing
Stock healthy, disease free fingerlings or seed from a certified hatchery once the biofilter is matured and water parameters are stable. Densities in RAS are very high, often tens of kilograms of fish per cubic metre at harvest, but must be matched to the system's oxygen and filtration capacity. Acclimatise seed carefully and stock in batches so the biofilter can cope with the rising waste load.
Varieties
RAS is best used for high value or hardy species that justify the cost: tilapia (GIFT), pangasius, Asian seabass (bhetki), pearl spot (karimeen), murrels (snakehead), trout in cold areas, and ornamental fish. Air breathing and hardy species are safer for beginners. Match the species to your market price, since RAS only pays off when the fish sells well.
Care & Management
RAS demands disciplined daily operation. Check oxygen, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and temperature, clean the mechanical filter, monitor the biofilter, and watch flow rates and pumps. Feed measured amounts of quality pellet several times daily and remove solids promptly. Keep spare pumps, blowers and a tested backup generator ready. Most RAS failures come from neglected filters, power cuts or overfeeding, so consistent monitoring is non negotiable.
Pests & Diseases
At high density, bacterial, parasitic and fungal diseases spread rapidly, and a biofilter crash or oxygen loss can kill stock within hours. Prevent problems with strict biosecurity, quarantine of new fish, stable water chemistry, and never overstocking or overfeeding. Disinfect equipment and footbaths, keep wild birds and animals out, and call a fisheries health expert at the first sign of disease rather than dosing antibiotics blindly.
Yield & Harvest
Grow out times depend on species, commonly 6 to 10 months to reach market size. RAS produces high yield per unit area; a well run system can harvest many tonnes per year from a compact shed, but actual output varies greatly with species, density and management. Harvest in batches by partial draining or netting, grade by size, and sell quickly. Treat any quoted yield as an indicative range, not a promise.
Cost & Profit
RAS needs heavy upfront investment, broadly in the range of around 7.5 lakh for a small unit to 25 lakh or more for medium and large units, plus high running costs for power and feed.
