Overview

Sarpagandha (Rauvolfia serpentina) is a perennial medicinal shrub grown for its alkaloid rich roots, long used in Ayurvedic and modern formulations for high blood pressure, anxiety and certain nervous disorders, with reserpine among its known compounds. It has steady pharmaceutical and Ayurvedic demand, and global demand for the root is substantial. Note that Rauvolfia is a protected plant whose wild collection and trade are regulated, so cultivation with proper documentation is the responsible route and helps farmers access legitimate buyers. It is a long duration crop maturing in about 2 to 3 years and grows in fertile, well drained soils in warm regions, including parts of the eastern, central and southern states and the Himalayan foothills. Returns depend on the long cycle, root yield and a verified buyer, so plan finances and legal compliance before planting.

Climate

Sarpagandha prefers a warm, humid tropical to subtropical climate. It grows well at about 25 to 35 degrees Celsius and favours regions with fairly high rainfall, growing up to around 1,000 metres altitude. It can tolerate partial shade. Frost is harmful and prolonged waterlogging damages the roots.

Soil

It favours deep, fertile, well drained soil rich in organic matter, such as clay loam or alluvial loam with good humus, and a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Deep, loose soil helps root development and digging. Avoid shallow, sandy or waterlogged land. Deep ploughing with ample farmyard manure improves root yield.

Planting & Spacing

Sarpagandha is propagated from seed, root cuttings, stem cuttings or root stumps. Seedlings are usually raised in a nursery and transplanted with the monsoon, around June to July, at about 45 cm by 30 cm spacing. Seed germination can be slow and uneven, so use fresh, treated seed or vegetative material for a good stand.

Varieties

Rauvolfia serpentina is the main cultivated species, valued for its reserpine and related alkaloids, with local selections differing in root yield and alkaloid content. Some related Rauvolfia species are also used. Use authentic, healthy planting material from a reliable, documented source, which also supports legal traceability.

Care & Management

Keep the field weed free, especially in the first year, and irrigate at intervals during dry periods while avoiding waterlogging. Apply organic manure as the main nutrient source. The crop benefits from light shade in very hot areas. Allow the plants to grow undisturbed over two to three years for the roots to build alkaloids.

Pests & Diseases

Sarpagandha is relatively hardy. Root rot and wilt can occur in waterlogged soil, so drainage is important. Leaf spot, mosaic type viral symptoms and occasional sucking pests may appear. Use disease free planting material, clean cultivation, crop rotation and need based control, removing badly affected plants to limit spread.

Yield & Harvest

Roots are harvested about 2 to 3 years after planting, usually in winter when the plants shed leaves. The plants are dug, roots cleaned, cut and sun dried. Average dry root yield is commonly around 2,000 to 2,500 kg per hectare under good management, with yield improving as the crop matures over the longer period.
