Himsagar Mango Farming in India 2026

Bengal's fibreless sweet pride from Malda and Murshidabad with a GI tag

Himsagar Mango farming in India

Overview

Himsagar is a premium mango from West Bengal, widely regarded as one of the finest table mangoes of eastern India. It is loved for its smooth, completely fibreless yellow to orange pulp, very high pulp content and rich sweet aroma. Himsagar is grown mainly in the Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia and Hooghly districts of West Bengal and is also found in neighbouring Bangladesh. The Malda Khirsapati, of which Himsagar is the well known form, received Geographical Indication recognition for the region. The fruit is medium sized, usually around 250 to 350 grams, with a very high share of edible pulp. Himsagar has a strong premium domestic market in eastern India and a growing presence in metros and select exports.

Climate

Himsagar suits a warm humid subtropical climate with hot summers and a dry spell at flowering, as found in the Gangetic plains of West Bengal. It needs warm sunny weather for ripening and a frost free site. High humidity raises disease pressure, especially anthracnose and powdery mildew, so a relatively dry flowering period and good canopy airflow are important for quality.

Soil

Himsagar grows well on deep, fertile, well drained alluvial and loamy soils of the Gangetic delta with a pH around 6.0 to 7.5. The rich alluvial soils of Malda support its vigorous growth and high pulp fruit. Drainage matters because the roots cannot tolerate waterlogging, so well drained slightly raised land is preferred over low flood prone fields.

Planting & Spacing

Himsagar is propagated by grafting on local seedling rootstock and planted at the start of monsoon in pits enriched with manure. Traditional spacing is about 10 by 10 metres for full sized trees, while high density orchards use closer spacing with pruning to raise early yield. Good site selection with drainage is important in the humid Bengal delta to reduce disease.

Varieties

Himsagar is the celebrated Bengal cultivar closely tied to Malda Khirsapati, which holds Geographical Indication recognition for the Malda and Murshidabad region. It is famous as an early to mid season fibreless mango. Related premium Bengal varieties include Khirsapati and Langra, but Himsagar is prized for its smooth pulp and aroma. For authentic quality, buyers look for the Malda Murshidabad origin.

Care & Management

Himsagar needs balanced manuring with farmyard manure and NPK, irrigation in dry spells especially at fruit development, and pruning to keep an open canopy that dries quickly after rain. Because the Bengal climate is humid, disease management is central, with timely sprays and good airflow. Mulching conserves moisture, and flowering and panicle protection from hopper and mildew secure quality.

Pests & Diseases

In the humid Bengal climate Himsagar faces strong anthracnose and powdery mildew pressure along with mango hopper at flowering, mealybug, fruit fly and stem borer. Manage hopper with recommended sprays at panicle stage, use methyl eugenol traps and remove fallen fruit for fruit fly, band trunks for mealybug, and rely on wettable sulphur, good canopy airflow and orchard sanitation against the fungal diseases that are common in the delta.

Yield & Harvest

Grafted Himsagar trees usually start bearing in about 4 to 6 years and reach good yields by year 8 to 10. It is an early to mid season variety, with the main harvest around late May to June in Bengal, earlier than many North Indian varieties. Yields vary with tree age, weather and alternate bearing, so plan output as a range and manage humid season disease carefully.

Cost & Profit

Grafted Himsagar saplings are inexpensive, and the variety is a steady premium crop in Bengal. Prices are good for well graded fruit and vary with grade, season and supply, with early high pulp Himsagar fetching a premium in metro markets. Income depends on yield, humid season losses and market access, so treat figures as a range and budget for the multi year establishment period.

These are indicative ranges. Actual cost and income vary by region, market and management, so verify locally.

Market & Demand

Himsagar has a strong premium domestic market in eastern India, especially Kolkata and other metros, valued for its fibreless pulp and aroma. It is sold in mandis, retail and online, and select consignments are exported, helped by the Malda GI branding. Its short shelf life means careful handling for distant markets. Buyers include premium retailers, online sellers and exporters.

Subsidy & Support

Himsagar growers can access MIDH and National Horticulture Board support for new orchards, high density planting, drip irrigation and post harvest units such as ripening chambers and pack houses. West Bengal horticulture schemes promote mango orchards, the Malda mango belt and market linkage. Assistance is a share of approved cost through the state horticulture department, so apply before planting and keep all bills.
