Commercial Jackfruit Farming in India 2026
From backyard tree to a versatile cash crop driving the vegan and processing boom

Overview
Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus) is a hardy tropical tree producing the world's largest tree-borne fruit, long grown across India and now emerging as a serious commercial and export crop. Modern interest is driven by demand for tender green jackfruit as a meat substitute in vegan and plant-based foods, ripe jackfruit for fresh eating and processing into chips, flour, pulp and value-added products, and the recognition of jackfruit as a nutritious, climate-resilient crop. Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh all grow significant jackfruit, with Kerala declaring it a state fruit and promoting branded products. Grafted varieties bring earlier, more uniform bearing than seedlings and allow orchard-style cultivation. With its low input needs, drought tolerance, year-round product range and booming processing and export demand, jackfruit is one of the most accessible and scalable high-value tropical fruit opportunities for Indian farmers.
Climate
Jackfruit thrives in warm humid tropical and subtropical climates with temperatures of about 20 to 35 degrees Celsius and rainfall of around 1000 to 2500 mm, though it tolerates drier spells once established. It is sensitive to severe frost and prolonged waterlogging but is otherwise hardy and adaptable, growing from the plains up to moderate hills across much of India.
Soil
It grows on a wide range of soils but prefers deep, well-drained sandy loam to laterite loam rich in organic matter, with a pH of about 6.0 to 7.5. It tolerates poorer soils than most fruit trees but dislikes waterlogging, which causes root rot. Deep soils allow the strong taproot to anchor and access moisture, aiding drought tolerance.
Planting & Spacing
Use grafted or budded plants of named varieties for earlier, uniform and predictable fruit, rather than slow, variable seedlings. Plant at the start of the monsoon in large pits enriched with compost, spaced about 8 to 12 metres apart for full orchards, or closer for high-density and tender-fruit systems. Wider spacing suits ripe-fruit production, while closer planting suits green jackfruit for the vegetable and processing market.
Varieties
Improved varieties include early types and selections valued for firm crisp flesh, sweetness, or suitability as tender vegetable jackfruit, such as Singapore or Ceylon jack, Swarna, Siddu, and various regional and Kerala selections. Choose grafted varieties matched to your target market, whether crisp ripe arils, soft sweet types, or tender green fruit for processing.
Care & Management
Young plants need irrigation, weed control and protection in the first two to three years, after which the tree is fairly self-reliant. Apply organic manure and balanced fertiliser, increasing with age. Prune to manage height for easier harvest, remove dead wood and improve light. For high-density tender-fruit systems, regular pruning and training keep trees compact and productive.
Pests & Diseases
Jackfruit can be affected by the shoot and fruit borer, mealybugs, spittle bugs, and fruit flies, plus pink disease, rhizopus fruit rot and stem rot in humid conditions. Bats, squirrels and birds may damage ripe fruit. Manage with sanitation, removal of affected fruit, fruit bagging where practical, pheromone traps and need-based protection, keeping orchards clean to reduce rot.
Yield & Harvest
Grafted jackfruit can begin bearing in about three to four years, much earlier than seedlings which take many years. A mature tree is highly productive and can yield from dozens to over a hundred large fruits a year, each weighing several kilograms to tens of kilograms, but figures vary greatly with variety, age and care, so verify locally. Green fruit is harvested young for vegetable use, ripe fruit when aromatic and slightly soft.
Cost & Profit
Jackfruit has low establishment and maintenance costs, high drought tolerance and a long productive life, giving strong returns relative to input. Income can come from green vegetable jackfruit, fresh ripe fruit, and processed products like chips, flour and ready meat substitutes, which add substantial value. As always, treat all cost, yield and price figures as indicative ranges and verify for your district, variety and market before scaling.

Market & Demand
Jackfruit markets span fresh ripe fruit, tender green fruit as a vegetable and meat substitute, and a fast growing processed segment of chips, flour, pulp, ready-to-cook jackfruit and frozen products for domestic and export buyers. The vegan and plant-based trend, plus branding efforts in states like Kerala, are expanding demand. Processing tie-ups and farmer producer organisations help capture higher value.
Subsidy & Support
Jackfruit is promoted under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture, state horticulture missions and processing and value-addition schemes, with Kerala and several states actively supporting jackfruit branding, primary processing and farmer producer organisations. Contact your district horticulture office, Krishi Vigyan Kendra and food processing department for current planting, processing and marketing support.
