Overview

Bael (Aegle marmelos), also called wood apple or Bengal quince, is a hardy native Indian fruit tree with deep cultural, religious and medicinal importance. Its hard-shelled fruit yields aromatic, sweet-tart pulp used for sherbet, squash, jam, candy, powder and traditional Ayurvedic remedies, especially for digestive health. Unlike delicate tropical fruits, bael is exceptionally tough, thriving on poor, dry, saline and degraded soils where few other fruit crops survive, which makes it ideal for dryland, wasteland and rainfed farming across central, northern and eastern India. States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Odisha and Rajasthan grow it widely. It suits semi-arid and dry regions with rainfall as low as 500 mm up to higher rainfall areas. A dry period helps fruit development, and the tree withstands drought far better than most fruit crops, making it a dependable dryland choice.

Soil

Bael grows on a very wide range of soils including poor, shallow, rocky, dry, alkaline and even mildly saline or sodic soils that defeat most fruit trees. It prefers well-drained loam for best yields but tolerates a pH range from about 5 to 8 or more. This soil hardiness is its key advantage for reclaiming and using marginal and wasteland.

Planting & Spacing

Use grafted or budded plants of improved varieties for larger fruit and earlier bearing, as seedlings are slow and variable. Plant at the start of the monsoon in pits enriched with compost, spaced about 6 to 8 metres apart, giving roughly 150 to 250 trees per hectare. Damage is usually minor and rarely needs heavy spraying. Sanitation, removal of affected wood and fruit, and need-based protection are normally sufficient, keeping it an easy crop.

Yield & Harvest

Grafted bael usually begins bearing in about four to five years and reaches good production within a few more years, while seedlings take much longer. Fruit is harvested when the hard shell turns yellowish green and is fully mature, often allowed to ripen further off the tree. A mature tree can yield from dozens to over a hundred fruits, but yields vary with variety, age and care, so verify locally. The tough shell gives excellent shelf life and easy transport.
