Urad (black gram) typically yields about 6 to 8 quintal per hectare under rainfed kharif conditions and 10 to 12 quintal per hectare with good management and assured moisture. Yield depends heavily on variety, timely sowing, YMV control and avoiding rain at maturity. Use improved varieties like Pant U 31, Shekhar 3, IPU 94-1 (Uttara) or PU 31, treat seed with Rhizobium, and sow at the start of the monsoon with 30 cm row spacing. Urad matures in about 70 to 90 days. Because pods do not ripen uniformly, harvest when most pods turn black to reduce shattering. Confirm recommended varieties and expected yields for your district with your KVK.

My rainfed urad in Sagar usually lands around the lower end, 6 to 7 quintal, mostly because rain at maturity spoils some pods. The year I had assured moisture and controlled YMV early, I touched close to 10 quintal. Timely YMV control is the single biggest swing factor for my yield.

Harvest timing makes a real difference to the realised yield. Urad pods shatter if you let the crop over dry in the field, and I lost grain that way. Now I harvest when about 80 percent of pods turn black, even if it means one or two extra pickings, and I save more grain.

Do not sow urad too late in kharif if you want the higher yields. My late sown crop caught more YMV and faced rain at harvest, both of which pulled the yield down. Sow with the first good monsoon rain and a short duration variety so it finishes before the late rains.
