Pangasius, sold as basa, is an air breathing catfish that tolerates crowded ponds and can be stocked at high density, giving heavy yields per acre, much more than ordinary carp culture, which is why it became popular in Andhra Pradesh. The trade off is that it needs a lot of formulated feed, so feed cost and the selling price at harvest decide whether you profit, and prices can swing sharply with market gluts.
