I have a one acre pond and want to do composite carp culture. Which species do I stock and in what proportion?

Composite fish culture stocks several compatible species that feed at different water levels so the whole pond is used. The classic combination uses three Indian major carps, catla which feeds at the surface, rohu in the middle, and mrigal at the bottom, often together with exotic carps like silver carp, grass carp and common carp to use all feeding zones. The stocking ratio and total number per acre are adjusted to your water quality, feed and management, so take the exact ratio and density from your state fisheries department or a fisheries college rather than overstocking. Prepare the pond by removing weeds and unwanted fish, liming and manuring before stocking healthy fingerlings of uniform size. Good water management and supplementary feeding decide your final yield.

Pond preparation before stocking made the biggest difference for me. Liming and manuring to build natural food, and stocking good fingerlings of even size, gave a much better harvest than dumping in cheap mixed seed.

The idea of fish feeding at different levels is the whole point, so do not skip a layer. When I added the bottom feeder properly the pond produced more from the same water and feed because nothing was being wasted. Get the ratio from the fisheries office, overstocking one species crashed my growth one year.

Stock fingerlings of even size, this matters more than people think. The one time I mixed big and small seed, the big ones bullied the feed and the small ones stayed stunted. Uniform healthy seed from a known nursery, stocked after proper pond prep, gave me a clean even harvest.
