Tur faces two big problems, Fusarium wilt and sterility mosaic disease (SMD), and both are managed mainly by resistant varieties. Grow wilt and SMD tolerant varieties like Maruti (ICP 8863), BSMR 736 or BSMR 853. For wilt, treat seed with Trichoderma viride, follow three to four year crop rotation with cereals, and ensure good drainage as waterlogging worsens it. Sterility mosaic is spread by an eriophyid mite and shows as bushy pale plants with no flowers or pods; rogue out affected plants early and control the mite vector if pressure is high. Avoid continuous tur on the same field. Confirm the diagnosis with your KVK before any spray.

The bushy no pod plants of sterility mosaic act as a source that infects the rest of the field. I now walk the field and pull out those plants the moment I spot them, before flowering, and bury them away from the crop. Leaving even a few standing kept the disease spreading the next season.

For the wilt side, ridge sowing and good drainage helped me a lot on heavy soil. Wherever water stood after heavy rain the wilt was worst. Combine that with Trichoderma seed treatment and a cereal in rotation and the field cleaned up over a couple of years.
