In the Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) tur belt, popular varieties include TS 3R, BSMR 736, BSMR 853, Maruti (ICP 8863) and GRG 152, many of which are valued for wilt and sterility mosaic tolerance. Maruti has long been grown for its wilt resistance in this region. Choose a medium to long duration type for assured rainfed black soils, sow in June with the monsoon, keep wide spacing, and treat seed with Trichoderma and Rhizobium. Rotate tur with cereals to reduce wilt build up in the soil. Variety performance changes with rainfall and soil, so confirm the current recommended variety with UAS Raichur or your local KVK before buying seed.
Maruti has been reliable on our farm for wilt. We also tried a newer medium duration line that podded earlier and escaped the late dry spell, so it helps to keep two durations.
TS 3R did well for me near Kalaburagi for grain size and the market liked the bold tur dal. But it is a longish duration type, so it needs the late rains to hold up; in a year the monsoon withdrew early it suffered more than the medium ones.
Whatever variety you pick, buy fresh certified seed each few years. Tur saved on farm for many seasons lost vigour and the wilt tolerance seemed weaker for us. UAS Raichur and the seed corporation outlets are safer sources than the open market.
In the neighbouring Vijayapura area we found sterility mosaic to be the bigger threat than wilt in wet years. So we lean on BSMR 853 and BSMR 736 which hold up against both, and we rogue out any bushy no pod plants early before the mite spreads it. Match the variety to whichever problem is worse in your village.
