For medium duration tur (arhar), use about 6 to 8 kg seed per acre (15 to 20 kg per hectare) when sown alone. Recommended spacing is roughly 90 to 120 cm between rows and 20 to 30 cm between plants for medium and long duration types, while short duration varieties can be closer at about 45 to 60 cm rows. Wider spacing gives bushy plants and more pods per plant under rainfed conditions. Treat seed with Trichoderma and Rhizobium before sowing. Sow with the onset of monsoon in June to early July. Tur is often grown intercropped with soybean or cotton, which changes the row arrangement; confirm the layout for your variety with your KVK.

I grow tur with soybean as intercrop in Akola in a 2:4 or 1:6 pattern, putting tur rows wide apart and soybean in between. The soybean gives an early harvest and income while the tur fills out later in the wider space. This used my land better than sole tur on rainfed black soil.

Nipping the growing tip (pinching) at about 30 to 40 days made my medium duration tur branch more and carry more pods. It is extra labour but on wider spacing the plants had room to spread, and pod number went up noticeably.

Do not sow tur too thick hoping for more yield. The year I crowded the rows the plants grew tall and leggy, shaded each other and gave fewer pods, plus disease spread faster. Wider spacing really does pay in rainfed tur, just keep the gaps even.
