Sugarcane wilt shows as gradual drying, lightweight pithy cane that sounds hollow, with internal tissue dull red to purplish brown and shrunken, often along with red rot in stressed crops. It is caused mainly by Fusarium and worsens with waterlogging, drought stress, and borer or red rot damage that open entry points. Management is preventive, use healthy disease free seed cane, treat setts with a recommended fungicide, avoid waterlogging by improving drainage, keep balanced nutrition, and control borers. Do not ratoon a wilt affected crop and rotate with non host crops. Choose tolerant varieties suited to your zone. There is no effective curative spray once cane is internally affected, so seed health and drainage matter most. Confirm sett treatment with your KVK.

Wilt hit my crop worst where the cane was already stressed by a long dry spell and then heavy water. Keeping the irrigation steady, not swinging between drought and flooding, and controlling borer that bores entry holes cut my losses the next season in Ahmednagar.

Wilt and red rot often come together and can confuse you. With wilt the cane goes pithy and light and the inside is more dull purplish brown, while red rot has the bright red with white crossbars and a sour smell. Either way the fix is the same direction, clean seed, good drainage, do not ratoon the sick crop. I took a sample to the KVK to be sure.
