Sweet potato planting from vine cuttings, ridge planting, vine lifting and harvest for good tubers.

Sweet potato is grown from healthy vine cuttings of about 20 to 30 cm planted on ridges or raised beds, which gives loose soil for tuber development and good drainage. Plant cuttings at a slant with a few nodes buried, keep the field weed free early, and apply balanced nutrition with not too much nitrogen, since excess nitrogen gives lush vines but few tubers. Periodically lift or turn the vines so they do not root at every node and divert energy from the main tubers. Tubers are usually ready in about 100 to 130 days when the leaves start to yellow; harvest carefully to avoid bruising. Confirm variety, spacing and nutrient dose with your KVK or Soil Health Card.
Lifting the vines so they do not root everywhere made a big difference in my tuber size. When I left them to root at every node I got plenty of vine but small tubers.
In Cuttack lifting the sweet potato vines so they do not root at every node really improved my tuber size. When I left them to root everywhere I got plenty of vine but small tubers.
A tip: go easy on nitrogen. The year I over fed urea I got a jungle of lush vines and hardly any tubers, balanced nutrition on ridges with good drainage gave the best yield.
