Backyard poultry is a low-cost way to earn extra income. Choose hardy dual-purpose birds suited to free range such as Vanaraja, Gramapriya, Kadaknath or improved desi types, which survive on kitchen scraps, insects and a little supplementary grain. Start with 10 to 20 birds, provide a simple raised night shelter to protect from predators and rain, clean water, and most importantly vaccinate against Ranikhet (Newcastle) disease and deworm regularly. Eggs and birds sell easily in villages and fetch a premium as desi. Your State Animal Husbandry Department and many NLM-linked schemes distribute low-input birds and chicks. This needs little land and gives steady cash from eggs plus festival meat sales.
I keep Vanaraja birds in my backyard. They roam freely, eat scraps and I just give a little broken rice. Eggs sell fast in the village. Only loss was when a dog attacked, so make a safe night coop.
