Want to hold my grain for better prices instead of selling at harvest. Build own godown or rent a warehouse?

Build your own godown if you store large volumes every year and have land; rent a warehouse if your volume is variable or smaller. A registered warehouse gives you a warehouse receipt against which you can sometimes raise a pledge loan, lets you store without big upfront cost, and provides professional pest and moisture control. Building your own makes sense over the long run for big consistent volumes and gives full control, but needs capital and good construction (damp proof, ventilated, rodent proof). Whichever you choose, dry grain to safe moisture before storage, use proper bagging and stacking, and treat against insects. Holding stock past harvest can fetch better prices, but factor storage cost and quality risk.

I use a registered warehouse and got a receipt that helped me take a loan against the stored grain. So I did not have to sell cheap at harvest just for cash. Worked well for me.

We store big volumes so a pucca godown made sense over years. But it must be damp proof and rodent proof or you lose grain. Dry the grain fully before stacking.
