There is no single best crop, the right crop is the one that matches your specific situation, so the crop planner looks at five things together. First, soil type and your latest soil test, because black cotton soil, sandy loam and saline soil each suit different crops. Second, water, meaning whether you have assured canal or tubewell irrigation, limited water, or only rain. Third, season, since kharif, rabi and zaid each have their own crop list. Fourth, your budget and risk appetite, because a high input crop needs more cash and carries more risk. Fifth, the market within reach, meaning what your nearest mandi actually buys at a fair rate and whether there is a buyer or processing unit close by. When you feed these in, the planner shortlists two or three crops that fit, instead of chasing one crop everyone is talking about. Always cross check the final shortlist with your local KVK and see current mandi prices before you commit seed and money.

This matches my experience. I kept growing soybean because my neighbour did, but my soil holds water and soybean rotted in heavy rain years. A KVK officer told me chickpea suited my soil better in rabi. Decide by your own field, not by what is trending.

The market point is the one farmers forget. I grew a crop with good yield but the nearest buyer was 90 km away and transport ate my profit. Check who will buy before you sow.
