I keep getting weed control wrong on timing. Sometimes too early, sometimes too late. How do I know the right time to spray?

Timing is one of the most important parts of weed control, and most spray failures come from spraying too late or on the wrong field condition. The rule depends on the type of herbicide. A pre-emergence herbicide must go on within about 1 to 3 days of sowing, on a moist, well-prepared soil, before weeds emerge, because it acts on germinating seeds and does nothing once weeds are up. A post-emergence herbicide must be sprayed when the weeds are small and actively growing, usually around 15 to 35 days after sowing depending on the crop, because small weeds are killed easily while big weeds survive and have already robbed the crop. Spray on a moist field, not a dry cracked one, since stressed weeds take up less herbicide. Avoid spraying just before heavy rain that washes it off, and avoid windy days that cause drift. For each crop there is a recommended weed-control window, and missing it badly cuts results. Use only herbicides recommended for that crop, follow the label for the exact stage and dose, and confirm the window for your crop with your KVK, because the right product at the wrong time can fail or damage the crop.

Spray when weeds are small. That single rule fixed most of my failures. On big weeds even a good product barely works and the crop is already hurt.

Always spray on a moist field, never a dry cracked one. Stressed weeds do not take in the chemical properly. I irrigate and wait for working moisture first.

Watch the weather. I sprayed once and rain came two hours later and washed it off completely. Now I check the forecast and avoid spraying before rain or on windy days.
