Jasmine, locally mullai or malli, can be very profitable in Tamil Nadu because of huge daily demand for garlands, hair flowers, temples and the natural perfume industry. Madurai malli is even GI tagged and famous. It is a perennial bush, planted once and yielding for many years, with peak flowering in summer. Daily picking is labour intensive but loose flower rates can be strong, especially in wedding and festival season, though they crash during glut. A well managed jasmine field gives steady income across years once established. Costs are mainly planting, pruning, manure and a lot of picking labour. Pick buds in the early morning, sell fresh the same day, and tie up with flower merchants or perfume buyers. Returns are good but rate volatility is real, so do not assume peak prices daily. Confirm local mandi rates first.

Madurai malli has a name, buyers come looking for it. My family has grown it for years. Summer is peak, rate is best then. Picking every morning is the hard part, you need labour or family help. But it pays year after year.

Profitable but rate goes up and down a lot. Some days great, some days dumping for low money. Prune properly after the season for good flush. Perfume company buyers near here also pick up bulk when garland demand is low.

Labour is the real cost in jasmine, the buds must be picked early every single morning before the sun opens them. If you cannot arrange steady pickers, even a small area becomes a headache. I keep my area to what my family and two helpers can manage daily.

After the summer peak I prune hard and give manure, the next flush comes back strong. Skipping the annual pruning gave me thin straggly bushes one year. Treat it like a long term investment, the bush keeps paying for many years if you care for it.

One caution on the money: the rate in glut can fall so low it barely covers the picking labour. On those days I send to the perfume buyer in bulk instead of dumping in the garland market for nothing. Having two buyer types saved me more than once.
