Conserving soil moisture is the foundation of successful dryland farming. Key practices include making field bunds and contour bunds to slow runoff and hold rainwater, deep summer ploughing to improve infiltration, and adding organic matter and farmyard manure to raise the soil's water holding capacity. Mulching with crop residue or plastic reduces evaporation and keeps the topsoil moist longer. Practise timely shallow inter cultivation to create a soil mulch that breaks capillary loss after rain. Sow across the slope, use wider spacing in low rainfall zones, and choose short duration drought tolerant varieties. In situ water harvesting like ridges and furrows and small farm ponds further buffer dry spells. Combine several of these rather than relying on one.
Bunding changed my fields. Earlier the rain water ran off, now it soaks in and the crop lasts longer in dry spells. I also do a shallow hoeing after rain to seal the surface.
Mulching with the previous crop residue keeps my soil moist much longer between rains. Adding FYM every year also makes a big difference in how the soil holds water.
A small farm pond saved my crop in one dry year. The water I harvested in it gave one life saving irrigation at flowering. Many states give subsidy for farm ponds, ask your agriculture office.
Deep summer ploughing once in a couple of years really helps the soil drink in the first rains instead of letting them run off. Combine it with bunding and you hold a lot more water in the profile for the dry weeks.
