Rhizome rot, also called soft rot, is caused mainly by Pythium and is worst in waterlogged soils, so the first step is good drainage. Use only disease free seed and treat setts with mancozeb at 0.3 percent before planting. In standing crop, remove and destroy affected clumps with the surrounding soil, and drench the area and nearby plants with mancozeb at 3 g per litre or metalaxyl based fungicide as per label. Soil solarisation of beds for 40 to 45 days before planting also helps in problem fields. Avoid planting ginger in the same field every year, rotate with non host crops to break the disease cycle.

Drainage is everything. My low patch always rots while the sloped beds stay fine. I now make high raised beds and the loss came down a lot.

Once you see one rotten clump, pull it out fast with soil around it and do not just leave it, the rot spreads through water. Drenching the spot stopped it from running down my row.
