Plant ginger with the first pre monsoon showers, generally April to May in Kerala, using about 600 to 720 kg of healthy seed rhizome per acre. Cut seed setts of 20 to 25 grams each with at least one healthy bud. Spacing of around 30 cm between rows and 20 to 25 cm between plants works well on raised beds or ridges and furrows. Treat seed rhizomes with mancozeb at 0.3 percent for about 30 minutes and dry in shade before planting to reduce rhizome rot. Suprabha is a good variety for Kerala, and Rio de Janeiro is popular for green ginger. Mulch heavily after planting to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

In Wayanad we plant by April end before the rains. Heavy green leaf mulch is the real secret here, it keeps the soil cool and the rhizomes fat. Re mulch once after about 45 days.

Do not skip the seed treatment, rhizome rot finished half my plot the first year. Now I treat with mancozeb and also pick seed only from healthy clumps. Big difference.

Seed rhizome is the biggest cost in ginger, so the per acre rate matters a lot for your budget. I keep some of my own healthy seed every year in a cool shaded pit and only buy fresh seed to top up. That cut my planting cost without bringing in disease from outside.

In the Karnataka plains we plant a bit later when the soil warms, so check your local pre monsoon timing rather than copying Kerala dates exactly. Raised beds with good drainage matter as much as the date here because our soils hold more water.
