Honey yield per box depends on the bee species, flora and migration. With Apis mellifera (Italian bee) colonies and good flowering (mustard, litchi, eucalyptus, multiflora), a well-managed box can give roughly 30 to 40 kg or more of honey per year if you migrate to good nectar sources, while a stationary box may give much less. Apis cerana (Indian bee) yields are lower. Income also comes from selling bee colonies, wax and pollination services. Start with a few boxes, learn colony management and pest control (Varroa mite, wax moth), and take training from a KVK. Beekeeping support is available under the National Beekeeping and Honey Mission; ask NBB and your horticulture department about box subsidy.

I keep mellifera boxes and migrate to mustard and litchi areas. Stationary boxes near my home gave much less. Learn from an experienced beekeeper first, otherwise colonies get weak or abscond.

Yield is not all in one harvest. I extract several times across the season as different crops flower, and the total over the year adds up far more than any single extraction. Plan your box placement around the flowering calendar of your district.

Migration costs money and effort, so add transport, labour and renting space near orchards into your maths before expecting the higher figures. For a stationary backyard beekeeper the income is real but modest. Be honest about whether you can migrate before counting on top yields.

Varroa mite quietly cut my yield before I even noticed weak colonies. Regular monitoring and timely management as advised by an experienced beekeeper kept my boxes strong. A weak, diseased colony makes almost no surplus honey no matter the flora.

Do not over-harvest and leave the colony without enough stores, especially before a lean flowering gap. I got greedy one year and lost bees. Leave them enough honey or feed sugar syrup as guided, and the colony rewards you next season.

Pollination service can earn as much as honey in some areas. Orchard and vegetable growers near me pay to keep my boxes during flowering, and the bees still make honey. Ask around fruit farms, it is an extra income channel many beginners miss.
