The underside of my groundnut leaves is covered in small orange to brown raised dots that release a rusty powder, and the leaves are drying. It is wet and humid. Tamil Nadu. Is this rust and how do I manage it?
Orange to brown raised pustules on the leaf underside that release a rusty powder, with leaves drying in humid weather, is groundnut rust. It often comes together with late leaf spot and the two together can defoliate the crop and cut pod filling. Manage them in the same spray programme. Remove last season groundnut debris and volunteer plants, since the fungus survives on them. Spray a recommended fungicide at first appearance and repeat as per label in continued wet weather, rotating fungicide groups to avoid resistance. Triazole based fungicides are commonly advised for rust along with a protectant, but follow the label dose and PHI and the local recommendation. For next year a tolerant variety helps in your high rainfall belt. Confirm rust and the fungicide schedule with your KVK or TNAU.
