Is onion seed (pyaaz beej) production profitable and what yield and price can I expect?

Onion seed production can be highly profitable per acre because seed sells at a much higher rate per kilo than bulbs, but the seed yield per acre is small and the crop occupies the land for a long two stage cycle with extra cost for mother bulbs, isolation and careful harvesting. The big risks are poor seed set from weak pollination or disease, and price swings, since onion seed rates rise sharply in years when seed is short and fall when there is a surplus. Pure true to type seed of a sought after variety fetches far more. Profit depends heavily on getting good set and quality. Check current seed rates and demand from seed companies, and ask your KVK or experienced seed growers for realistic yields before deciding.
