I want to grow alsi for seed and oil. When should it be sown and what conditions suit it?

Linseed, called alsi, is a rabi oilseed grown in the cooler months. It is sown roughly from mid October to mid November and likes cool weather during growth with a dry spell at maturity. It is widely grown in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and parts of Rajasthan, often on conserved moisture as a rainfed or limited irrigation crop. It suits medium to heavy soils with good drainage. Frost at flowering and excess moisture both hurt it. Unlike the new superfoods, alsi is an established oilseed with a known supply chain and the seed is sold for oil and increasingly as a health food, so it is a lower risk entry than quinoa or chia. Confirm the recommended variety and date for your district with your KVK.

In MP we sow alsi after the kharif crop on leftover moisture. Cool weather crop, do not push sowing late or yield drops.
