Garlic lehsun planting time clove spacing fertiliser bulb size high yield Madhya Pradesh.

Garlic is a rabi crop and bulb size depends on timely planting, big healthy cloves and steady nutrition. Plant healthy, bold cloves separated just before planting around October to November when temperatures cool, at about 15 cm between rows and 10 cm between cloves, pressing each clove with the pointed end up about 4 to 5 cm deep. Use well rotted farmyard manure and a balanced fertiliser with full phosphorus and potash basal and nitrogen in splits; avoid heavy late nitrogen which delays bulbing. Keep the crop weed free and irrigate at regular intervals, stopping irrigation about two to three weeks before harvest. Harvest when lower leaves dry and tops bend. Madhya Pradesh is a leading garlic state; confirm the recommended variety and exact spacing with your local horticulture office.
In Ratlam I select only the biggest cloves from the best bulbs for seed, and that alone improved my bulb size a lot. Stopping irrigation before harvest helps the bulbs cure and store better.
Separate the cloves just before planting, not days ahead. When I peeled and kept them too early they dried out and germination dropped. Same day separation kept them fresh and the stand was more even.
Weeds quietly steal garlic yield because the crop is short and cannot shade them out. The years I kept on top of weeding early, my bulbs were clearly bigger. It is tedious hand work but garlic pays back a clean field.
Garlic price swings hard from season to season in our mandi, so I do not put all my land into it. Good curing and storage let me hold the crop and sell when the rate improves instead of dumping at harvest. Check recent rates on the portal before you decide your area.
Do not pile on nitrogen late hoping for bigger bulbs, it does the opposite. My late urea dose gave lush tops but delayed bulbing and the bulbs stayed small. Keep the nitrogen in early splits and let the plant move into bulb formation on time.
