Garlic fertilizer and nutrient guide

Overview

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a shallow-rooted, long-duration bulb crop that responds strongly to balanced nutrition, especially nitrogen and sulphur. Bulb size, clove count and the characteristic pungency all depend on a steady supply of nutrients through the active growth phase. Because the root system is small and confined to the top soil layer, garlic cannot draw nutrients from deep down, so fertiliser must be placed near the root zone and split through the season. Sulphur is the nutrient that sets garlic apart from most vegetables, as it builds the allicin and sulphur compounds responsible for flavour and keeping quality. Always base your fertiliser plan on a soil test through your Soil Health Card and confirm the exact dose with your local KVK, since soil type and previous crop strongly change the requirement.

Recommended NPK dose for Garlic

A common recommendation is about 100:50:50 kg N:P:K per hectare (roughly 40:20:20 kg per acre) along with 30 to 50 kg sulphur per hectare. In many states the dose is 75 to 100 kg N, 40 to 50 kg phosphorus and 40 to 50 kg potash per hectare. These are general ranges; the actual figures must come from your soil test report. Sandy and low-organic soils usually need the higher end, while fertile loams need less. Confirm your final dose with the Soil Health Card and your KVK before purchasing fertiliser.

Application schedule

Apply the full phosphorus, full potash, full sulphur and one third of the nitrogen as a basal dose at planting, mixed into the top soil. Give the remaining nitrogen in two top dressings, the first at 30 to 35 days after planting and the second at 55 to 60 days, both followed by light irrigation. Stop nitrogen top dressing once bulbs begin to swell, usually after about 70 to 75 days, because late nitrogen delays maturity, softens bulbs and harms storage life.

Organic & bio-fertilizers

Mix 15 to 25 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure or compost per hectare into the soil two to three weeks before planting. Where FYM is short, 4 to 5 tonnes of good vermicompost per hectare works well. Integrated nutrient management, using about half the nutrients from organic sources and half from fertiliser, gives better bulb quality and soil health. Seed clove treatment or soil application of Azotobacter and phosphate-solubilising bacteria improves nutrient availability and can cut chemical fertiliser use.

Micronutrients & deficiency signs

Sulphur is essential for garlic. Apply it through single super phosphate, gypsum or elemental sulphur to build pungency, bulb weight and storage quality. Sulphur deficiency shows as pale yellowing of younger leaves and thin, low-flavour bulbs. Zinc sulphate at about 20 to 25 kg per hectare helps in zinc-deficient soils, where leaves show yellow bands between veins and stunted growth. Boron supports clove filling; deficiency causes hollow or poorly filled bulbs. Apply zinc and boron only when a soil test confirms a shortage, as excess boron is toxic.

Tips & cautions

Do apply sulphur every season as garlic is a heavy sulphur feeder. Do split nitrogen and stop it before bulbing. Do mix FYM well in advance so it is fully rotted. Don't use fresh manure, as it invites soft rot and pests. Don't apply heavy nitrogen near maturity, since it delays drying and ruins storage. Don't broadcast urea on wet leaves, which causes leaf scorch. Always irrigate lightly after each top dressing and keep the field weed-free during the early growth stage.

These are general recommendations. For the exact dose, follow your Soil Health Card / soil test and local KVK, and avoid over-applying urea.

FAQs

Why is sulphur so important for garlic?
Sulphur builds the allicin and sulphur compounds that give garlic its pungency, flavour and long storage life. Without enough sulphur, bulbs are small, mild and store poorly. Apply 30 to 50 kg sulphur per hectare through single super phosphate, gypsum or elemental sulphur as a basal dose.
When should I stop applying nitrogen to garlic?
Stop nitrogen top dressing once bulbs start to swell, usually around 70 to 75 days after planting. Late nitrogen keeps the plant green, delays maturity, softens bulbs and reduces storage life, so finish all nitrogen before the bulbing stage.
How much FYM does garlic need per acre?
Apply about 6 to 10 tonnes of well-rotted farmyard manure per acre, which is roughly 15 to 25 tonnes per hectare, mixed into the soil two to three weeks before planting. If FYM is short, use 2 tonnes of vermicompost per acre instead.
Can I use the same fertiliser dose every year?
No. Soil nutrient levels change with each crop and the previous crop. Always get a soil test through your Soil Health Card before each season and adjust the dose. Confirm the final plan with your local KVK, as the right dose depends on your soil type and fertility.
