Khejri sangri pods cultivation seed propagation spacing lopping fodder sangri price market Rajasthan India

Khejri is usually raised from seed in a nursery and transplanted, or it regenerates naturally; improved planting and selected types give better pods and fodder. It is planted widely spaced as scattered trees on field bunds and within crop fields in the traditional silvi-pasture or agri-silviculture system, rather than as a dense orchard, so it shares the land with crops and animals. It is very slow but extremely long lived and low input once established, needing little water after the first couple of years. The young pods (sangri) are harvested, dried and sold as a prized desert vegetable, and dried sangri can fetch a high price per kg because demand exceeds supply, especially for the authentic Rajasthani delicacy, while fodder lopping supports livestock. Sangri prices vary by year, quality and market, so treat them as a range and check with local traders. Because khejri is protected in Rajasthan, follow the rules on lopping and cutting, and get propagation and management advice from your KVK or the arid research station.
Dried sangri sells very dear because everyone wants the authentic taste and supply is limited. We dry and store our pods and sell when the rate is good. The tree asks for almost nothing once it is grown.
