Khejri establishment first years watering protection grazing weeding survival desert tree transplant care India

Khejri is famously drought hardy once grown, but the first couple of years after transplanting are when it needs care and protection to survive, because the young plant has not yet sent its deep taproot down to reach moisture. In the establishment period give some life saving irrigation in the dry months, protect the young plant from grazing animals with a guard or fencing since browsing kills many young khejri, keep the basin weed free, and mulch to conserve moisture. Plant at the onset of the monsoon so the rains help establishment, and choose healthy nursery raised plants. After the first two to three years, once the taproot is deep, the tree becomes extremely self reliant and needs little or no irrigation, which is its great strength in the desert. Do not over water an established tree. Confirm a simple establishment and protection schedule with your KVK or the arid research station, and remember khejri is protected in Rajasthan, so follow the rules later when lopping.
Goats and stray cattle are the biggest killers of young khejri here, so we guard every plant until it is tall enough. A few waterings in the first summers and then it looks after itself for life.
Plant at the start of the monsoon and protect from browsing, that is the whole secret. After two or three years ours never get watered and still give fodder and pods every year.
