Is khejri farming worth it and what are its uses and income in dry areas?

Khejri (Prosopis cineraria) is the famous tree of the Thar desert and is grown more as an agroforestry and multipurpose tree than as a typical fruit orchard, valued for fodder (loong), fuelwood, the edible pods called sangri used in dishes like ker sangri, shade and nitrogen fixing that actually helps crops grown under it. It is extremely drought hardy, suited to arid and semi arid sandy soils of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and similar regions, and survives where almost nothing else does, making it central to traditional desert farming. Income is usually indirect and spread out: fodder for animals, sangri pods which fetch a good price as a dried delicacy, fuelwood, and improved yields of crops intercropped beneath it. It is a long term, low input tree rather than a quick cash crop. Note khejri is a protected and culturally important tree in Rajasthan with rules on cutting, so check local regulations.
