Sow chana in Rajasthan between late October and mid November for best results. Sowing in this window lets the crop flower in cooler weather and escape terminal heat at pod filling. For irrigated conditions you can sow up to the end of November, but every week of delay reduces yield and increases wilt and pod borer pressure. Use 75 to 80 kg seed per hectare for desi types and treat seed with fungicide plus Rhizobium and PSB culture. Keep row spacing about 30 cm. In dry zones, conserve monsoon moisture and give one critical irrigation at branching or pod development if water is available. Check local agriculture department advisories for your tehsil.

In the Sri Ganganagar canal belt many of us sow a little earlier, from about the third week of October, because we have irrigation and the cooler start helps branching. On pure rainfed Bikaner land I wait for the soil to cool and sow in early November so heat at flowering is less.

One tip that helped me avoid resowing: sow at a slightly deeper 7 to 8 cm in the dry belt so the seed reaches moist soil, and do not sow on a thin top layer of moisture. Light pre sowing irrigation (paleva) where canal water is available gives much more even germination.
