Potato is a heavy feeder needing plenty of phosphorus and potash plus split nitrogen, but follow your state recommendation and a soil test. A common range is around 120 to 180 kg N, 60 to 80 kg P2O5 and 100 to 150 kg K2O per hectare in intensive belts like West Bengal. Apply all phosphorus and potash and about half the nitrogen as basal at planting, and the rest of the nitrogen at earthing up around 30 to 40 days. Mix in well rotted FYM at 20 to 25 tonnes per hectare. Potash is important for tuber size, dry matter and storage quality, while too much late nitrogen delays maturity and lowers keeping quality. Earth up properly to cover tubers and prevent greening. Use your Soil Health Card to set the exact dose.

Earthing up at the right time made a real difference for me, both for tuber size and to stop green potatoes. I split nitrogen and put the rest at earthing up.

Do not skimp on potash for potato. The years I kept potash low the tubers were smaller and did not keep as well in store. Get the soil tested though, since the right dose depends on your field and the range is just a guide.
