Potato is a heavy feeder grown for its underground tubers, so the fertilizer plan must support both vigorous early foliage and steady tuber bulking later. The crop has a fairly shallow, fibrous root system and a short, intense growing period, which means nutrients need to be available in the right place at the right time. Nitrogen drives the canopy that powers tuber growth, but too much late nitrogen delays maturity and lowers tuber quality and storage. Potash is especially important because potato removes a lot of it and it improves tuber size, dry matter and keeping quality. Phosphorus supports root and tuber set. Recommended NPK dose for Potato
For plains alluvial soils a common range is about 150 to 200 kg N, 60 to 90 kg P2O5 and 100 to 150 kg K2O per hectare, which is roughly 60 to 80 kg N, 24 to 36 kg P2O5 and 40 to 60 kg K2O per acre. Hill and high yield situations may push nitrogen and potash higher, while acidic or black soils have their own adjusted rates. Note how high the potash is, because potato is a strong potash remover and tuber quality depends on it. As ICAR itself notes, there is no single ideal NPK ratio for the whole country, since requirement changes with soil, climate and variety. Application schedule
Apply the full phosphorus, the full potash and about half to one third of the nitrogen as a basal dose, placed in the furrow at planting but kept from direct contact with the seed tubers. Give the remaining nitrogen as top dressing, usually in one or two splits, and time it with earthing up at around 25 to 35 days after planting when the plants are roughly 15 to 20 cm tall. Earthing up not only covers the developing tubers and prevents greening, it is the ideal point to band the nitrogen near the root zone before mounding soil over it. Avoid heavy nitrogen after the canopy is full, since late nitrogen delays tuber maturity and lowers storage quality. Keep moisture steady through tuber bulking, as both drought and waterlogging hurt the crop.
Organic & bio-fertilizers

Zinc is the most common micronutrient deficiency in potato in many Indian soils, showing as stunted plants with small, cupped or bronzed upper leaves and short internodes, corrected with zinc sulphate applied to the soil or as a 0.5 percent foliar spray. Boron deficiency can cause cracked, corky tubers and brittle growing points, corrected with a careful borax spray of about 0.1 to 0.2 percent, since excess boron is toxic. Magnesium deficiency shows as yellowing between the veins of older leaves and can be corrected with magnesium sulphate. Manganese and iron issues appear mainly on alkaline soils. Apply any micronutrient only on the basis of a soil test or a clearly identified symptom, and never apply a blanket dose, since potato responds badly to nutrient excess.
