crop after paddy rabi options wheat mustard chickpea potato residual moisture crop planning

After paddy you have a strong rabi window, and the best follow up crops use the residual soil moisture and break the paddy cycle to keep the soil and yields healthy. Common and good choices are wheat, mustard, chickpea, lentil, potato, and various rabi vegetables, depending on your soil, water and market. Bringing in a pulse like chickpea or lentil after paddy is especially good because it fixes nitrogen and reduces the next crop's fertiliser need, and rotating away from rice every season helps with weeds and pests. Where water is short, mustard, chickpea and barley need much less than wheat. The main practical point after paddy is timely field preparation and sowing, since a late paddy harvest can delay rabi sowing and cut its yield, so choose a duration that fits and prepare the field quickly. Avoid burning paddy residue, manage it into the soil instead to feed it. Pick the rabi crop based on your water and local market and confirm the right variety and sowing window with your KVK.
After paddy I take mustard or chickpea on the leftover moisture with very little irrigation. The pulse also helps my next crop. Rotating off rice every rabi keeps weeds down.
Sow rabi fast after paddy. The year my paddy harvest was late, my wheat sowing slipped and yield dropped. Pick a crop and variety that still fits if paddy runs late.
