Elephant foot yam (suran, jimikand) is planted at the start of the warm season, around February to April before or with the early monsoon, using whole small corms or cut pieces of large corms each carrying a portion of the central bud. Cut pieces should be treated and dried before planting to avoid rot. Plant on well drained ridges or in pits with plenty of organic manure, spacing around 90 cm each way, as it is a heavy feeder and a long duration crop of several months. Choose a non acrid or improved variety like Gajendra so the tuber does not cause throat irritation, which the market prefers. It is harvested when the plant dries down. Confirm the recommended variety, corm size and spacing with your KVK.

Use a non acrid variety like Gajendra, the old itchy types are harder to sell. Treat and dry the cut corm pieces before planting or they rot. It is a heavy feeder, give it lots of manure.

Good drainage and ridges are key, the corm rots in standing water. It sits in the ground for months but the corm gets big, so be patient and feed it well.
