Overview
Trout, mainly rainbow trout, is a high value cold water fish farmed in the clear, cold, fast flowing streams of India's hill states. It is realistically suited only to the Himalayan and high altitude regions of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of the north east, Sikkim and the southern hills, where water stays cold and well oxygenated year round. Trout is grown in concrete raceways through which spring or stream water flows continuously, and the fish reaches a portion size in about ten to twelve months. Because it is a premium fish with strong demand from hotels, tourists and restaurants in hill areas, trout fetches a high price, making it attractive where conditions allow. However, it is restricted to cold water sites, depends entirely on a reliable supply of clean, cold, flowing water, and needs good quality cold water feed. It suits hill farmers with access to a perennial cold stream who can manage water flow and quality.
Climate
Trout needs a true cold water climate with water temperatures ideally around 10 to 18 degrees Celsius and never staying too warm, which limits it to high altitude and mountain regions. It thrives where there are perennial cold springs or snow and glacier fed streams. It is not suited to the plains or any warm water area, since high temperatures and low oxygen quickly kill trout. A cold, clean, well oxygenated and continuously flowing water source is the single most important requirement.
Soil
Trout does not need farmland; it is grown in concrete raceways, tanks or, in newer setups, cold water RAS units, fed by a cold stream or spring. A typical village raceway is a long narrow concrete channel, for example around fifteen metres long and two metres wide, through which water flows continuously by gravity. The site needs a perennial cold water source above the raceway for gravity flow, good inlet and outlet design, and protection from floods and silt. Land slope to allow flowing water is more important than soil type.
Planting & Spacing
Trout farming usually starts from imported or domestically produced eyed ova or fry raised in a hatchery, then transferred as fingerlings to grow out raceways. Stocking density is set against the volume and flow of cold water, since oxygen supply through flowing water limits how many fish a raceway can hold. Grade fingerlings by size to reduce cannibalism and uneven growth, and stock healthy, uniform fish. Reliable seed supply is a key constraint, so source from recognised government or private trout hatcheries.
Varieties
The main farmed species in India is rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), valued for faster growth and good market acceptance, while brown trout (Salmo trutta) is present in some hill waters and is more often associated with sport fishing than commercial farming. For commercial culture, use rainbow trout eyed ova or fingerlings from a recognised hatchery, as seed quality and disease free status strongly affect survival and growth in the demanding cold water environment.
Care & Management
Care centres on maintaining a steady flow of clean, cold, well oxygenated water through the raceway and feeding a high quality cold water trout pellet several times a day suited to fish size. Keep raceways clean of waste and uneaten feed, monitor water temperature, flow and oxygen, and grade fish regularly to even out growth. Protect against floods, silt after heavy rain, and predators like otters and birds. Trout are sensitive, so any drop in flow, oxygen or water quality must be corrected quickly.
Pests & Diseases
Trout can suffer bacterial and fungal infections and parasites, often triggered by stress from warm spells, low flow, crowding or poor water. Predators such as otters, kingfishers and other birds can take fish from open raceways. Sudden silt loads or floods after heavy rain can smother or wash out stock. Prevent problems with clean flowing cold water, correct density, grading, predator netting and good seed. Avoid routine chemical use and consult fisheries experts at the first sign of disease.
Yield & Harvest
Rainbow trout typically reaches a portion size of around 200 to 300 grams in about ten to twelve months in a standard village raceway, with larger sizes taking longer. A single standard raceway can produce roughly a tonne of portion sized trout per cycle, though output depends on water flow, temperature, feed and management. Harvest by netting from the raceway and chill or sell fresh quickly. All yields are indicative and depend heavily on water conditions and care.
Cost & Profit
Building a trout raceway has a moderate cost, with one reference figure of around 2.3 lakh rupees for a standard raceway, and running costs are dominated by feed (cold water trout feed costing roughly around 90 to 100 rupees per kg) and seed.
