Overview
Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) is a perennial herb grown for its leaves, which contain steviol glycosides such as stevioside and rebaudioside that are 200-300 times sweeter than sugar yet contribute almost no calories. Rising demand for natural sugar substitutes among diabetics and health-conscious consumers has made stevia an attractive specialty crop. It is grown as a multi-cut crop: a single planting yields harvests of leaves for two to three years, with three to four cuttings each year. India has become a notable player in the global stevia market, though China remains the largest producer. Success depends strongly on quality planting material, good drying to preserve glycoside content, and above all an assured buyer, since dried-leaf prices fluctuate and there is no government-declared MSP. Growers are strongly advised to secure a buy-back contract with an extraction company before planting commercially, and to treat any income figures as indicative ranges that depend on yield, glycoside percentage and the prevailing buyer rate.
Climate
Prefers warm, humid subtropical conditions with temperatures around 20-30 degrees C and partial shade in very hot regions. It is sensitive to frost and to extreme heat above 40 degrees C. Day length affects flowering; long days keep the plant vegetative, which is desirable since flowering reduces leaf sweetness.
Soil
Grows best in well-drained, light, slightly acidic to neutral sandy loam soils with pH around 6.0-7.5 and good organic matter. Waterlogging is harmful, so raised beds with drip irrigation are recommended. Saline and heavy clay soils are unsuitable.
Planting & Spacing
Mostly propagated from rooted cuttings or tissue-cultured plantlets rather than seed, since seed germination is poor and variable. Transplanted on raised beds with drip, commonly at about 45 x 30 cm to 40 x 25 cm spacing, giving roughly 40,000-100,000 plants per acre depending on spacing. Plant at the start of the warm season after the risk of frost has passed.
Varieties
Commercial cultivation uses high-glycoside, high-biomass selections multiplied through cuttings or tissue culture; named cultivar use is limited in India and many growers plant nursery-supplied elite clones. Choose planting material with high total steviol glycoside content (commonly cited around 7-10 percent in good leaf) and verify the source nursery's quality.
Care & Management
Needs regular but light drip irrigation and balanced nutrition with emphasis on organic manure. Pinching the growing tips early encourages bushy growth and more leaf. Remove flower buds promptly, since flowering lowers glycoside content. Keep beds weed-free, especially in the first weeks after transplanting.
Yield & Harvest
First cutting comes about 3-4 months after transplanting, then roughly every 3 months, giving three to four cuttings a year for two to three years from one planting. Leaves are harvested just before flowering, then shade or controlled dried. Dry-leaf yields are commonly reported in the range of about 1.5-3.5 tonnes per hectare per year, varying with management, cuttings and climate.
Cost & Profit
Establishment cost in the first year is high because of planting material and drip, but the same plants yield for two to three years, improving overall margins. Reported benefit-cost ratios for stevia are often favourable (some studies cite around 1.8) but assume a reliable extraction-company buyer and good glycoside content.
