Overview
Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) is a drought-hardy succulent valued for the gel inside its thick fleshy leaves and for aloin, the bitter yellow latex. It is one of the easiest medicinal-aromatic crops to grow because it tolerates poor sandy soils, low rainfall and neglect, making it popular in Rajasthan, Gujarat and other dry regions. The leaf gel is processed into cosmetics, skincare, juices and Ayurvedic preparations, while aloin is used in pharmaceuticals. Once established, an aloe plantation yields for several years from a single planting using suckers, so input costs after the first year are low. Yields and returns depend heavily on the buyer, processing arrangement and whether the grower sells raw leaves or value-added gel. High-aloin accessions such as the IC-111271 series identified by NBPGR are preferred where aloin extraction is the goal. Because raw-leaf prices fluctuate widely, growers are advised to secure a buy-back or processing tie-up before planting at scale and to treat all figures as indicative ranges, not guarantees.
Climate
Grows best in warm, dry tropical to subtropical climates. Thrives in hot regions with 35-40 degrees C summers and tolerates drought well, but is highly sensitive to frost and waterlogging. Annual rainfall of 350-1000 mm is suitable; excess moisture causes root and leaf rot.
Soil
Prefers well-drained sandy loam to loam soils with pH around 6.5-8.5. Tolerates marginal, alkaline and slightly saline soils where many crops fail. Good drainage is essential; heavy clay and waterlogged fields must be avoided. Adding farmyard manure improves leaf bulk.
Planting & Spacing
Propagated through suckers or offshoots planted at the start of the rainy season or in spring. Common spacing is about 60 x 45 cm to 60 x 60 cm, giving roughly 25,000-30,000 plants per hectare. Plant suckers shallow on ridges or flat beds with the base just covered. Light irrigation after planting aids establishment.
Varieties
Selection is mostly by accession rather than named commercial varieties. NBPGR accessions such as IC-111271, IC-111269, IC-111280 and IC-111273 are noted for high aloin content (commonly cited around 20-23 percent), while accessions like IC-111266, IC-111272 and IC-111277 are noted for high gel content. Choose accession based on whether the target market wants gel or aloin.
Care & Management
Low maintenance once established. Needs only occasional irrigation in dry spells; avoid over-watering. One or two manual weedings in the first year and a basal dose of farmyard manure are usually enough. Remove flowering stalks if leaf bulk is the priority. Gap-fill dead plants with fresh suckers.
Yield & Harvest
Leaves become harvestable from about 8-12 months after planting, with 3-4 leaf cuttings per year thereafter. Lower mature outer leaves are cut by hand. Fresh leaf yields are commonly reported in the range of about 40-50 tonnes per hectare per year under good management, continuing for 4-5 years from one planting before replanting. Actual yield varies widely with accession, soil and irrigation.
Cost & Profit
First-year establishment cost is the main expense; later years need only maintenance, so margins improve over the plantation life. Returns depend almost entirely on whether the grower sells raw leaves at low farm-gate rates or processes gel and aloin for higher value.
