Overview
Seabuckthorn, sold as Leh berry, is a thorny shrub that grows wild across the cold desert of Ladakh and high Himalayan valleys, where almost no other fruit survives the harsh climate. Its bright orange berries are exceptionally rich in vitamin C, antioxidants and oils, making them highly valued for juices, jams, herbal supplements, cosmetics and the famous Leh berry health drink. The plant is extremely hardy, tolerating intense cold, drought and poor soils, and it also fixes nitrogen and stops soil erosion on barren slopes. The Defence Institute of High Altitude Research at Leh has long worked on cultivation, processing and value addition, and Ladakh is being promoted as India's seabuckthorn capital. For high altitude cold desert communities it offers a rare cash crop that converts wild and waste land into income. Most current harvest still comes from wild stands, so organised cultivation and better post harvest handling hold large untapped potential for growers.
Climate
Seabuckthorn is a plant of cold, high altitude desert regions and tolerates extreme winter cold well below freezing as well as intense summer sun and drought. It thrives in the dry, sunny conditions of Ladakh and other trans Himalayan valleys above about 2500 metres. It needs a cold winter dormancy and full sunlight, and is not suited to hot plains or humid climates.
Soil
Seabuckthorn grows on poor, sandy, gravelly and stony soils typical of cold deserts and riverbeds, and even tolerates somewhat alkaline and saline conditions. It prefers well drained soils and full sun. Because it fixes nitrogen through root nodules, it improves soil fertility and is widely used to stabilise barren slopes and prevent erosion in fragile mountain landscapes.
Planting & Spacing
Seabuckthorn is grown from seedlings, cuttings or suckers, planted in spring after the snow melts. Because the plant is dioecious, both male and female plants are needed, with about one male for every six to eight female plants for good pollination, since pollination is by wind. Spacing is roughly 2 to 3 metres. Once established, it needs little care and spreads by suckers.
Varieties
In Indian Ladakh the main species is Hippophae rhamnoides, with several local wild types differing in berry size, colour and acidity. Research institutes including DIHAR have collected and conserved diverse germplasm and are selecting improved, higher yielding and easier to harvest types. Most cultivation still uses local wild material, while improved selections are gradually becoming available to growers.
Care & Management
Seabuckthorn needs little input once established, surviving on natural conditions. Light irrigation in the dry growing season and occasional manure improve berry yield. The biggest practical challenge is harvesting, because the branches are very thorny and the berries cling tightly. Pruning to keep plants manageable, maintaining male plants for pollination, and protecting young plants from grazing animals are the main tasks.
Pests & Diseases
In its harsh cold desert home seabuckthorn faces relatively few serious pests and diseases, which is one of its advantages. Occasional problems include drying or wilt linked to fungal infection, aphids and gall mites on young growth, and damage from grazing livestock and rodents. Good plant vigour, sanitation and protection of young plants usually keep losses low.
Yield & Harvest
Plants begin bearing berries in about three to four years. Berries ripen in late summer to autumn, from August to October, and are harvested by cutting fruit laden branches or by hand, which is slow because of the thorns. Reported yields vary widely by plant age, type and management. Careful harvesting and quick processing protect the delicate, juicy berries from spoilage.

Seabuckthorn offers cold desert communities a valuable cash crop, with experts noting that good post harvest management and value addition can lift returns substantially per unit of land, and figures of a few lakh rupees per hectare per year have been cited for well managed value added production. These are optimistic projections that depend heavily on processing, marketing and price realisation, since raw berries alone earn far less.
