Overview

Climate
Composting itself generates high internal heat, so it works in most climates, but a covered yard or tunnel protects the process from rain and extreme weather and gives more control. Soil
The raw materials, not soil, are the focus: wheat or paddy straw as the carbon base, a nitrogen source such as poultry manure or urea and other supplements, gypsum to improve structure, and water. These are mixed in the right ratio so the finished compost has the correct nitrogen level, moisture and texture. A casing material such as coir pith or pasteurised soil is also often supplied alongside for growers.
Planting & Spacing
Compost is made by the long method over several weeks of outdoor stacking and turning, or the faster short method using an indoor tunnel with controlled pasteurisation and conditioning. The straw is wetted and stacked with manure and gypsum, turned several times as it heats and ferments, then pasteurised and conditioned at controlled temperature to remove ammonia and competitors. The finished selective compost is then sold, or spawned and sold ready to fruit.
Varieties
The main product is selective compost for white button mushroom, and the same yard can adapt the recipe for related Agaricus types. Some units also produce or supply pasteurised straw substrate for milky and oyster growers, plus casing soil. Offering consistent, well conditioned compost of a known nitrogen level is the differentiator.
Care & Management
Process control is everything: maintain correct moisture, get the nitrogen ratio right, turn on schedule, and pasteurise and condition thoroughly to remove ammonia and kill competitors and pests. Test compost for ammonia and moisture before release. Keep the yard clean and away from existing crops to avoid carrying flies and moulds, and deliver compost promptly so it reaches growers in prime condition.
Pests & Diseases
Poorly made compost is itself the biggest problem, carrying competitor moulds, residual ammonia, flies and mites that then ruin the grower's crop. Flies breeding in the compost yard and cross contamination from nearby cropping rooms are key risks. Correct conditioning, proper pasteurisation, a clean separated yard and fly control protect both your product and your customers' results.
Yield & Harvest
There is no crop harvest; the product is finished compost. The long method takes roughly four weeks of stacking and turning, while the short tunnel method finishes in about two to three weeks with better quality and control. Output is measured in tonnes of compost per batch, so a unit sizes itself to local grower demand. Spent compost remaining after a grower's crop can be sold separately as a soil amendment, adding a second revenue stream.
Cost & Profit
This is a capital and space intensive enterprise needing a yard or tunnel, turning and filling machinery and a steady supply of straw and manure, more than a spawn lab or oyster unit. The return comes from selling compost in bulk to many growers at a margin over raw material and processing cost, with extra income from spent compost.
