Button Mushroom Farming in India 2026

India's most grown mushroom and the backbone of the commercial industry.

Button Mushroom farming in India

Overview

White button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) accounts for the largest share of India's total mushroom production and is the variety most consumers recognise. It is grown on composted wheat straw inside cooled, humidity controlled rooms, so a successful crop depends more on managing temperature and hygiene than on land or season. Traditionally it was a winter crop in the northern plains, but with environment controlled units it is now produced year round across the country. Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are major producing regions, and large integrated units supply supermarkets, hotels and canning plants. For a new grower it offers a tested package of practice from ICAR-DMR Solan, steady urban demand, and the option to start small in a seasonal cropping room before investing in full climate control. Returns depend heavily on compost quality and disease control, so training before the first crop is strongly advised.

Climate

Spawn running needs 22 to 26 degrees Celsius with 90 to 95 percent humidity, and fruiting needs a cooler 14 to 18 degrees Celsius with 80 to 90 percent humidity. This temperature drop is why button mushroom needs either a cool winter or a cooled, insulated cropping room. Good ventilation to remove carbon dioxide is essential during pinning.

Soil

It is not grown in soil but on pasteurised compost made from wheat or paddy straw, poultry manure or other nitrogen source, gypsum and supplements. Compost is prepared by long method or faster short method composting. After spawn run the bed is topped with a casing layer of pasteurised spent compost or coco peat plus farmyard manure, which triggers fruiting.

Planting & Spacing

Spawn (grain inoculated with mushroom mycelium) is mixed into prepared compost at about 0.5 to 0.75 percent by weight and filled into trays, beds, polythene bags or shelves. The compost is kept at spawn run temperature in the dark for two to three weeks until white mycelium covers it, then the casing layer is applied. After casing colonises, temperature and fresh air are adjusted to start pinning.

Varieties

Common strains used in India are the white smooth caps from ICAR-DMR Solan and imported hybrid strains. There is a white strain for the table market and brown strains (cremini and portobello) for niche premium buyers. Choosing a strain suited to your room temperature and season is important.

Care & Management

Maintain high humidity by light misting without wetting the casing too much, keep fresh air moving to lower carbon dioxide, and hold fruiting temperature steady. Hygiene is critical: disinfect rooms between crops, use clean water, and keep insects out with screens. Pick mushrooms before the veil opens for best grade.

Pests & Diseases

Main problems are competitor moulds like green mould (Trichoderma), brown plaster mould and bacterial blotch, plus sciarid and phorid flies and mites. Most issues come from poor compost pasteurisation, dirty rooms or high humidity on caps. Control through strict hygiene, correct composting, fly screens and removing infected beds promptly rather than heavy chemical use.

Yield & Harvest

Fruiting begins about three weeks after casing and a crop yields in three to four flushes over six to eight weeks. A realistic biological yield is roughly 15 to 20 kg of fresh mushroom per 100 kg of wet compost under good management, though figures vary with strain and skill. Total crop cycle from composting to last pick is about ten to twelve weeks. Treat all yield numbers as ranges, not guarantees.

Cost & Profit

Seasonal low cost units in a cool climate can start with modest spend, while a year round environment controlled unit needs large investment in cooling, racks and a compost source. Fresh button mushroom typically sells wholesale in a wide band depending on city and season, with retail and exotic packs fetching more. Profit hinges on compost quality, crop yield, low contamination and reliable buyers. Verify current local mandi and retail rates before planning.

These are indicative ranges. Actual cost and income vary by region, market and management, so verify locally.

Market & Demand

Buyers include local vegetable markets, supermarkets, hotels and restaurants, and canning or processing units for tinned and dried mushroom. Fresh mushroom is highly perishable and must reach the buyer within a day or two, so cold storage and quick delivery matter. Many growers also sell to organised aggregators who supply retail chains.

Subsidy & Support

Support is available under the National Horticulture Board and the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture for mushroom units, spawn labs and compost units, usually as credit linked back ended subsidy. ICAR-DMR Solan and many state agriculture universities run paid training programmes. Check current guidelines and your state horticulture department for the latest rates and eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I grow button mushroom without an air conditioned room?
Yes, in cool hill or northern plain winters you can grow seasonally without cooling. For year round production in warm areas you need an insulated, cooled cropping room to hold the 14 to 18 degree fruiting temperature.
How long does one button mushroom crop take?
From compost preparation to the last harvest it is roughly ten to twelve weeks, with picking spread over three to four flushes in about six to eight weeks after casing.
What is the biggest reason crops fail?
Poor compost and weak hygiene are the top causes. Bad pasteurisation lets competitor moulds and flies take over, ruining the bed, so clean rooms and correct composting matter more than anything else.
Where can I buy good quality spawn?
Buy spawn from ICAR-DMR Solan, state agriculture universities or licensed private spawn labs. Always use fresh, contamination free spawn of a strain suited to your room conditions.
Is button mushroom profitable for a beginner?
It can be, but only with training, good compost and a reliable buyer. Start with a small seasonal crop to learn before investing in a full climate controlled unit, and confirm local prices first.
